Pipe spools are pre-engineered, prefabricated piping assemblies combining pipes, fittings, flanges and other components into fully welded, installation-ready sections. Fabricated to detailed isometric drawings and strict dimensional standards, they minimise fieldwork, move welding into a controlled environment and take weather off your critical path.
They are also one of the easiest things in the industry to quote badly. Here is what closes the gap between a padded number and a firm one.
1. Isometrics, not a line list
A line list tells us how much pipe. Isometrics tell us how many welds — and welds, not metres, are what drives cost. Two spools of identical length and diameter can differ by a factor of three in shop hours depending on how many joints, branches and fittings they contain.
Send the isometrics if they exist. If they do not yet exist, say so and send the GA with the routing; we will price on an assumed weld count and state the assumption in writing so it can be corrected later without a renegotiation.
2. The full material specification
“Stainless” is not a specification. We fabricate in stainless steel 304 and 316, carbon steel to ASTM A106 and A105, duplex and super duplex, Alloy 20, Incoloy and Inconel — and the cost difference across that list is enormous.
Give us the grade, the schedule or wall thickness, and the flange rating and face type. If material is free-issue from your side, say that clearly and tell us who bears the risk on shortfall — it changes both the price and the programme.
3. NDT scope — the one that moves the number most
This is the item most often left blank, and the one with the widest cost range. “NDT as required” forces us to assume the worst case or ask a question that delays the quotation by a week.
Tell us the percentage and the method. We carry out radiographic testing (RT), hydrostatic testing, positive material identification (PMI) and non-destructive testing (NDT) — but 10% RT and 100% RT are different businesses.
Also state whether third-party inspection applies, and if so which agency and which hold points. TPI can be arranged for pressure equipment; it needs to be in the quotation rather than discovered at the first inspection call.
4. Surface treatment and painting
Surface preparation standard, primer type, number of coats, dry film thickness, and finish colour. If the spools are going into a corrosive environment or will sit in a laydown yard through a monsoon before erection, tell us — the protection required is different.
For stainless, say whether pickling and passivation are required, and whether any carbon steel contamination controls apply in the shop.
5. Testing and documentation
Hydrostatic test pressure and medium. Whether testing is by spool, by system or at site. And critically, the documentation dossier: what certificates, in what format, with what numbering.
Retrofitting a documentation dossier after fabrication is the slowest part of any handover. If your project has a specific format, send it with the enquiry, not with the purchase order.
6. Delivery sequence and site constraints
Spools are almost never wanted all at once. Tell us the erection sequence and the required-on-site dates by area or system, and we will schedule fabrication to match rather than delivering in the order the drawings happened to arrive.
Also flag transport limits: maximum length, width and weight your access road and crane can handle. A spool that cannot reach its location is a spool that gets cut and re-welded at site, which defeats the entire purpose of prefabrication.

Why prefabrication is worth the effort
Because every one of those questions is answered once, in an office, instead of repeatedly at height in the rain. Prefabrication minimises fieldwork and accelerates installation timelines. All welding is performed in certified facilities by qualified personnel. It avoids delays caused by material shortages or adverse site conditions, and it reduces field welding — which cuts both error risk and safety exposure.
The same logic extends further. Skid packages take it to the limit: process equipment, piping, valves, instrumentation and controls integrated onto a single frame, pre-assembled, factory acceptance tested with hydrostatic tests, electrical checks and instrumentation calibration, then delivered ready to install.
